Millions of tons of municipal solid waste are generated in the United States each year, representing an average of almost five pounds of solid waste per person each day. In addition, millions of tons of hazardous waste are produced yearly by nearly 20,000 industrial sources. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates hazardous wastes through the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). In this eLearning course, you will learn how solid waste is defined, what is contained in a solid waste inventory, and how hazardous waste determinations are made. This training course is the first in a three-part series. After completing this online course, participants should complete the courses: Hazardous Waste Disposal and Hazardous Waste Forms.
